Edited to add: We have a new blog post with updated information on what to do on Sundays that can be found HERE.
Why come/stay in Amish Country on a Sunday?
The Amish celebrate church, family and friends on Sundays. Every other Sunday will be spent with their church family and the opposite Sundays you will find them visiting other churches, family and friends. Sunday is a true day of rest for the Amish, only doing what is necessary.
Out of respect for the beliefs of the founders of our community, you will find nearly all of the shops and restaurants closed on Sunday. So what is there to do? There are a few treasures to be found, memories to be made and good food to be had, you just need to know where to find it. But don’t worry, we have done all of the work for you!
Right here in Berlin, the shops are all closed for the day, however you can grab a quick meal at Burger King, Subway, East of Chicago or the new Dairy Queen. A few minutes away in Charm, you can enjoy a delicious Swiss/Amish lunch buffet at Chalet in the Valley. They are open Apr-Dec, from 11-3. After lunch you can walk across the street to Guggisberg Cheese, also open Apr-Dec from 11-4.
In the neighboring town of historic Millersburg, you can have lunch or dinner at Bag’s Sports Pub. They are open Sundays 11-9. Millersburg Brewing Company is located right beside them and is open from 12-6. Millersburg also offers other dining options in the form of various fast foods restaurants as well as a Mexican restaurant, Las Palmas. Starlight Antiques, All Things Retro and the Victorian House Museum are all open on Sundays.
You can make a day of it and travel east or southwest of Berlin and find a lot of fun things to do.Heading about 30 minutes east to Dover, you will find Warther’s Museumopen from 9-5. In Dover there are many restaurants open from fast food to casual dining. On your way to or from Dover, be sure to stop in Sugarcreek and take a look at the World’s Largest Cuckoo Clock. Sugarcreek is also home to a second Bag’s Sports Pub location and Park Street Pizza. Park Street features gourmet pizzas and salads. Head about 45 minutes southwest of Berlin and you will find yourself in Coshocton and Roscoe Village. is an 1830’s restored canal town. You can take a canal boat ride (weather permitting) or experience the living history exhibits including blacksmithing and broom making. Also in Roscoe Village is Warehouse Steak and Stein restaurant, open Sunday’s from 11-8. About 15 minutes east of Roscoe Village is Raven’s Glenn Winery. They are open Sundays for a brunch from 11am-2:30pm, but their wine-tasting room and gift shop would be open until 4. Across the street from Raven’s Glenn is Unusual Junction, open 10-6. This is a gourmet food lover’s dream, where you can find one of Ohio’s largest selection of hot sauces and mustards, spices, Amish cheeses, deli meats, trail bologna and candies, as well as unique gifts and home décor. You can also grab a lite lunch or early dinner at the Lava Rock Grill located inside Unusual Junction open from 11-4.
This is just a few of the things open in and around the area, you can travel even further away and find great places to eat or things to do. But one of the things I love about this area the most is the peace and tranquility a Sunday afternoon offers. When I am asked what there is to do on a Sunday I always jokingly say, “It’s the perfect day to reconnect with each other”. And I do believe this to be true. If I was here on a Sunday, I would sit out on the front porch swing or cozy up by the fire and take the opportunity to let the peace from the area settle into me and my loved one while we fall deep into conversation and comfortability.
