If you are interested in the history of the Amish, you will want to visit Behalt, the Amish and Mennonite Heritage Center. This will give you the history of how the Amish came to America and their reasons for their core beliefs. Very informative and fun. On their property they also feature a one room schoolhouse and pioneer barn with artifacts and examples of Amish life.
Maybe you like history in general, there are many museums in Amish Country. Warther’s Museum would be my favorite. There you can hear about and see the talent that Earnest “Mooney” Warther was blessed with. The family legacy the Warther’s are known for the most, would be their fine cutlery, but when you see the talent Mooney had as a master carver of steam locomotives you will have a whole new respect for the Warther name. You will also have the opportunity to see the gardens and home Mooney and his wife lived in. His wife, Freida, had an extensive button collection, also on display.
For the lovers of antiques, there are many, many antique stores in the area .There is at least one antique store in each little town in Amish country. And a few on the roads in between.
Do you like wine? I happen to like wine and one of the best things of our area is the many different wineries. There are so many to choose from and they all have some really good wines. If I am in a hurry and just need to pick up a bottle, I can always go to Swissters and pick up a bottle from any of Ohio’s fine wineries and maybe some craft beer for my man. Some of the wineries offer live music either in the afternoon or evening hours.
We all know women come to Amish country to shop, did you know there are some shops that appeal to men as well? Lehman’s Hardware, Charm Harness and Boot, Keim Lumber and Miller’s Gun Supply are just a few of the attractions that will help women convince their men to make the trip!
Another question I get asked all the time is “what is there to do when the shops close?” As I had mentioned before, some of the wineries offer live music on Friday and Saturday evenings and some on Saturday afternoons. But after the shops close, during the months of May – Dec, you should check out some of the live shows in the area. The Amish Country Theater in Walnut Creek features a live comedy, variety show. Similar in style as the old Hee-Haw show. This show will keep you laughing! If you like musicals, a show at the Ohio Star Theaterin Sugarcreek is a must see. They offer three different shows at different times a year, which means multiple visits to Amish Country might be in order.

Want to know what each of us feel is a MUST-SEE, ask! Need help in finding all of the antique stores or wineries, ask! What in the world is there to do on a Sunday, ask! Maybe you feel courageous enough and want us to plan your day for you with our favorites, ask! Sometimes looking through someone else’s eyes can be a very fun adventure!!!
