As winter descends on Ohio's Amish Country, the rolling hills around Berlin transform into a snow-dusted wonderland that seems lifted from the pages of a Christmas story. The clip-clop of horse hooves on crisp winter evenings and the warm glow of lanterns create an atmosphere that makes this season especially magical for couples seeking a romantic holiday escape.
Journey to Bethlehem: A Candlelit Path Through Time
In the heart of Walnut Creek, the annual Journey to Bethlehem experience transforms the quiet countryside into a living recreation of the first Christmas. As you and your loved one walk hand in hand along the candlelit paths, local volunteers in period costume bring the ancient story to life. The sound of soft hymns carries on the winter breeze as you encounter shepherds tending their flocks and wise men following the star.
What makes this experience particularly romantic is the peaceful walk between scenes. Bundle close together as you stroll through the winter evening, perhaps sharing a thermos of hot chocolate while discussing the touching moments you've witnessed. The final scene, featuring Mary and Joseph with the Christ child, is set in a genuine barn complete with livestock, creating an authentically moving conclusion to your journey.
The free event will take place on Friday, December 6 and Saturday, December 7. Both walking and driving are required to see all of the stops.
There's something inherently romantic about shopping together on a winter evening. The shops along Main Street and in Sheiyah Market stay open late that night so you can start (or finish) your holiday shopping. As if the sales, giveaways, and holiday atmosphere are not enough, many of the stores have live music and refreshments.
Berlin gets into the holiday spirit with twinkling lights and Christmas Carolers along the street. Grab a cup of coffee or mulled cider and just stroll along taking in the festive atmosphere.
Shopping Under the Stars takes place on Friday, December 6. Many stores will be open until 8 or 9 pm that evening.
